Mother’s Day in a whole new language

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

I wanted to change the way we celebrated Mother’s day this year, so my team started spinning wheels and we came up with a super fun class! Hope you can use some of these activities in your classroom or at home!

We start with matching game, cards printed with family member’s pic and name in Spanish. Then we  use similar cards to place in a family tree and each student places cards which correspond to their families. Other copies of the cards are placed on children’s back and they pass the ball, when music stops, they need to tell who the family member that student has on their back, who they are? Quien soy yo??? The others answer eres….

We colored a mother’s day page which I am placing here as a free gift to all moms and teachers who follow our blog.

We watched a great video and the older ones had to tell us what family members were missing.

We also sang bingo tune for my version:

Te amo mama, mucho, mucho eres mi mama!

Amo a mi mama! Amo a mi mama, amo a mi mama, Yo amo a mi mama!

We also read this book, they love hearing about Emma’s family! There’s a version without the read along and this one has the read along!

Multilingual, Bilingual, That Is The Question!

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

Dear Readers,

This week, while planning for our first multilingual playdate, I started thinking about how parents feel when they need to chose a foreign language to their children and why chose at all!

I have started a research to develop a program which will give parents some easy tools to teach basics of any languages at home, even without knowing the language and the most important, making it fun!

While thinking about activities for the playdate, I decided to use colorful balls and have children kick them around the room while counting the kicks, parents will coach with a helper sheet. Lot’s of fun!

If you would like to do this activity at home, here is the vocabulary for Spanish, Portuguese and German:

eins 1
zwei 2
drei 3
vier 4
fünf 5
sechs 6
sieben 7
acht 8
neun 9
zehn 10
eins 1
zwei 2
drei 3
vier 4
fünf 5
sechs 6
sieben 7
acht 8
neun 9
zehn 10

um 1
dois 2
tres 3
quatro 4
cinco 5
seis 6
sete 7
oito 8
nove 9
dez 10

uno 1
dos 2
tres 3
cuatro 4
cinco 5
seis 6
siete 7
ocho 8
nueve 9
diez 10

Going back to our question, I think above all, you need to offer a fun experience to your child, so if one or 10 languages, which they capable of learning at the same time, you must search for a fun way to bring them into their daily playtime and not make it a chore, a duty!!!

If you do the activity at home and send us the video to: claudia@easylearnlanguages.com, we will post your video on the blog.

Have fun!

Lullabies in Portuguese

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Dear Readers,

I was singing to my son tonight and I sang all the same Brazilian Lullabies I always sing:

Boi da cara preta, Maezinha do céu, Chu chu chu, Sereia, Samba lele ( I will list those songs in another post)

He said Mom, Im kind of tired of the same songs, can you sing something different and I sang this song which reminds us how beautiful life is! It always makes me cry, because reminds me of Brazil! So I wanted to share here on the blog:

A vida- Gonzaguinha

How children learn

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Dear Readers,

This summer I am fortunate to have two Rowan students completing an internship with us and I asked them as their first assignment to research how children learn and work on an entry to my blog, I proudly present the first one:

 How Children Learn

Your child is constantly learning. As you eat dinner with them, they are learning the names of new foods. As they play on the playground, they are learning how to interact with other children their age. Even as you speak to them, they are learning how to communicate. Your child may ask a lot of questions and be very curious, like an information sponge. It is an amazing thing to watch your child grow as you teach them lessons everyday—even if you don’t realize it.

Every day brings new experiences and lessons learned. Since early childhood is the age at which a child’s brain develops, they are able to absorb a lot of information. Every child learns at their own rate, and they learn by “doing” and getting involved in the activity. It is the same idea when you are introducing your child to a foreign language. You may be worried that presenting them with a completely new language will overwhelm them and cause them to be confused. But learning can always become fun for your child, even when they are learning a foreign language. Instead of asking your child to fill out worksheets and overwhelming them with subject-verb agreement, you can include language lessons in the activities they already enjoy!

We use language in every part of our lives; so introducing your child to a new language would not be too overwhelming, as long as you do it in a fun and interesting way. You can sing a song in Spanish and dance and get the whole family involved. You can go to a pet store and count the puppies in Spanish. If your child loves to play dress-up, you can pick out outfits and say the names of clothing in Spanish. You can even play games and run around in your backyard while pointing out objects in Spanish. All of these activities will be enjoyable for your child; you child might not even realize they are learning! That is how learning can be made fun and “easy!” – by Rachel Mancini

If you are interested on how your child learn and acquire languages, we will be posting more on that topic soon!
